National Cancer Awareness Day: Early Detection Can Save Lives; India Records Over 1.4 Million New Cancer Cases Annually

Mumbai, Nov 06, 2026: National Cancer Awareness Day, observed annually on November 7, highlights the importance of cancer prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment. On this occasion, Dr. Antony Raj James, Head & Neck Oncosurgeon at Apex Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, emphasises the urgent need to improve awareness about head and neck cancers, recognise early warning signs and encourage people to seek medical advice without delay.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), under the GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates, India recorded approximately 14.13 lakh new cancer cases and 9.16 lakh cancer-related deaths. Particularly concerning is the burden of oral cancer, with 1,43,759 new cases reported in 2022, making it the second most common cancer in India across both genders.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Antony Raj James said, "Cancer is not always a death sentence. The biggest challenge we face is that many patients approach specialists when the disease has already advanced. Early detection can make a tremendous difference to treatment outcomes, quality of life and survival. I strongly urge people not to ignore persistent symptoms such as mouth ulcers that do not heal, unexplained lumps in the neck, difficulty swallowing, persistent hoarseness, changes in voice or unusual growths in the oral cavity. These symptoms need proper medical evaluation rather than self-medication or delay."

Dr. James further highlighted that tobacco consumption in any form, including cigarettes, gutka, pan masala and chewing tobacco, along with excessive alcohol consumption, significantly increases the risk of oral and head and neck cancers. He emphasised that avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and undergoing timely medical examinations are important preventive measures.

With specialised training at Tata Memorial Hospital and over four years of experience in Head & Neck Oncology and surgical cancer care, Dr. Antony Raj James specialises in oral cavity cancer surgery, thyroid cancer surgery, salivary gland and parotid tumours, neck dissection, skull base tumour surgery and head and neck cancer reconstruction.

"Cancer awareness must go beyond one day. Recognising warning signs, overcoming fear and seeking timely expert consultation can save lives. Let us make early detection a priority and build a more informed and cancer-aware society," he concluded.
